Santons The Santon(santoun meaning “little saint” in Provençal language) dates back to the late 18th century. As an essential part of the Provençal Christmas celebration, they are cherished by collectors worldwide.
These brightly painted figures were originally based on the biblical characters of the nativity. Later, local peasants were added, representing the characters of a Provençal village who bring their gifts to the Christ child, along with their farm animals and produce.
With the exception of the Holy Family and kings, all the characters are delightfully attired in late 18th century or 19th century Provençal costumes
Our favorite Santonier, Marcel Carbonel, is well known for his colorful, traditional clay santons. He has won the MOF (Meilleurs Ouvriers de France-Best Craftsmen of France) award.
All the figures are hand molded out of clay and hand painted with paints they mix themselves.
A standing figure is 2.75” tall.

In France one rarely sees a nativity scene without the ox and donkey. It is their breath that keeps the baby warm!
